The Forest & The Sea

Released March 12, 2012 Digital Album

Pyrenees' debut album is a musical interpretation of zoologist Marston Bates' 1960 book The Forest & The Sea. Composed during a journey through Extremadura and Andalucía, the record translates Bates' first-person naturalist adventure into atmospheric house and techno.

About the Album

Jeremias Carroza discovered a copy of Marston Bates' The Forest & The Sea for a single pound in a London antique shop. Reading it during a summer in Calella, Barcelona, he set out on a route through Extremadura and Andalucía, composing as he travelled. The result is a record where melodic lines rise from warm, unknown terrain — a thin connection between sound and Bates' narrated landscapes.

Influences draw from Detroit techno's charisma and the spirit of UK-techno, recalling labels such as A.R.T. and artists like B12, Kirk Degiorgio, Link, and Ian O'Brien. Vintage-textured drums, primal-house energy, and a post-rave sensibility thread through the album's nine tracks.

Track Notes

"The Study Of Life" emerges from the deep, blending selvatic howls and melodic reveries with vintage-textured drums. "The Living World & Rain Forest" pairs house-step percussion with a bright, multi-cellular development. "The Open Sea" expands the vision with refreshing notes and a collage of samples and sensitive drums.

"Woodland, Savanna & Desert" traverses drier landscapes with a jazz-influenced percussive approach and cosmic attitude. "Units Of Life" hypnotizes with elements drawn from primitive club memory and a crepuscular melody born from the underground. "Animal Behaviour" leans into IDM-rooted experimentation with analog organisms and vocal flashes. The closing track, "Backyard Exploration," brings the journey to a lush climax, honouring the past while looking forward.
